Marathon Training and Recovery

marathon training/recoveryTreating Runner’s Injuries

At New York Sports Medicine and Physical Therapy, we are experts in the sport of running and can help you train for the New York City Marathon. We have the knowledge and skill to get you prepared to run your personal best on race day.

Our team of physical therapists – some of whom are also elite runners— are experts at treating training-related injuries such as ITB syndrome, runner’s knee, hip pain, plantar fasciitis (heel pain) and shin splints. Our therapists utilize manual therapy/deep tissue myofascial release and running-specific exercises to help expedite recovery while you prepare for the marathon. We realize how hard you've worked to get this far, and will do our best to ensure you experience a pain-free race day.

What is ITB Syndrome?

One of the most common areas of injury in runners is caused by overuse of the iliotibial band (ITB), a muscle that runs along the outside of your thigh. If it becomes tight, it can create friction around the outside of your knee, causing it to become inflamed and painful. ITB syndrome results from the repetitive motion and stress of training for a distance event.

Physical therapy can help to alleviate the inflammation. By massaging and stretching out the tissues and teaching our patients how to strengthen the muscles on the inside of the knee, we can help to restore the correct muscle mechanics. This will help reduce pain and prevent further overuse injuries.
